HISTORY
As explained by the Guardians of the Universe, Piston is an extremely powerful mechanical creature, sorely lacking in intelligence. His origins remain largely unexplained.[1] He allied with Goldface following their escape from the Sciencells on Oa. Perhaps it was Goldface's actions in freeing fellow prisoners that made Piston unusually subservient to Goldface.[2]
During their time as fugitives, Piston and Goldface were joined by other alien criminals, including Evil Star. While Goldface was initially hesitant to engage Green Lantern Hal Jordan, the group was eventually forced into a conflict by Evil Star's recklessness. Goldface, still unprepared to face off against the Emerald Knight, ensured that Piston and his other allies avoided the brunt of that particular battle.[3]
Piston later resurfaced as part of a trap laid for Guy Gardner in a ghost town called McTeague's Corner in Death Valley. At the time, Gardner had lost his Green Lantern power ring and was using a yellow power ring formerly belonging to Sinestro. While Guy was distracted by a "local" man claiming the town was haunted, Piston attacked, confirming Guy’s suspicions that something was wrong. Despite being a formidable-looking opponent, Piston was not a high-level threat and Guy defeated him with relatively little effort.
The fight served as a distraction for the primary trap. Congratulating Guy for his victory, the "local" man stole Guy's yellow ring. This was Repo, another of Goldface's gang, with Jocasta.[4]
While Repo and Jocasta attempted to use the ring, Piston only sought to impress his employer. Though Goldface would take the ring, Gardner was able to reclaim It and defeat the villains. Gardner insisted the villains face justice under Earth's legal system rather than being returned to the Sciencells on Oa. Piston has not been seen since.[5]
