HISTORY
The Flaming Spear was a top-secret, experimental space-plane designed to push the boundaries of orbital flight.[1] While originally an Arden Air project, the craft officially became a Ferris Aircraft asset following a corporate buyout of Arden that was finalized the very day of the plane's high-stakes test flight.
The mission was flown by test pilot Frank Laminski[2] (identified in early records as Frank Nichols).[3] During the flight, the Flaming Spear’s controls became unresponsive, locking the pilot into a terminal descent. While various investigations attributed the mechanical failure to pilot error and the operator’s inability to compensate for the malfunction, earlier reports revealed that the craft had been compromised by saboteurs possibly aiming to cripple the Ferris-Arden merger.[4]
Before the Flaming Spear could impact, Green Lantern Hal Jordan intervened, successfully intercepting the craft and saving the pilot from certain death. Following the rescue, the Green Lantern apprehended the saboteurs responsible for the technical interference. However, the fallout from the near-disaster was permanent for the pilot, Ferris Aircraft management permanently grounded Laminski, ending his career as a test pilot.[5]
