HISTORY
When Walker Gabriel attempted to spare his adoptive mother Theresa Gabriel from a fatal car accident in 1985 he unwittingly created an alternate timeline in which the United States of America and the Soviet Union engaged in a nuclear war. By preventing the accident the other driver, Wilson Sebastian, was not embroiled in a series of scandals which would otherwise ruin his political ambitions.
As one of President Ronald Reagan's cabinet, Sebastian's advice led to increased tensions in Central America. On October 17, 1987 the tensions culminated in war between the two nations. The so-called "Purification Strike" killed most of America's superheroes.
By 1998, the Walker Gabriel of this timeline was working for Amanda Waller as researcher for the N.S.D. The Hunter Project Laboratory in Livermore, CA, sought to create a one-way time-transmission system with a tachyon superconductor which would enable America to reverse the damage done in the war, presumably be preemptive strikes on the Soviets. Though tests on inanimate objects had shown success, tests on human subjects did not. Commander Hunter had tested the system, with fatal results.
On Wednesday October 5, 1998, the Walker Gabriel of the original timeline woke from a thirteen year stasis to a world he barely recognized. He sought out his counterpart and in a bid to jumpstart his time travelling powers and thus restore his timeline, leapt into the tachyon projection field with the Walker Gabriel of the alternate timeline in close pursuit. This Walker Gabriel was thrown to the end of time.
Like his doppelgänger, this Walker Gabriel was endued with timetravelling powers. Now the Anachronos, he claimed to have spent millennia to return to the 20th Century and saw humanity's future as dark and full of bloodshed. He would attempt to destroy his hated counterpart but was defeated by the original Walker Gabriel. - Chronos #9
Subsequent manipulations of the timeline by Gabriel may have negated the existence of Anachronos, but since Walker Gabriel as Chronos is a time paradox himself, it is possible Anachronos survives somewhere in the timestream.
