History
Mallory Drake hounded Mac Shane, managing editor of the Evening Blade for a job as a crime reporter. Finally giving in, Shane hired the young man as Drake went off to tell his brother, singer and vocal acrobat Jerry Drake. Finding Jerry at a local night club he was meeting with the club owner when hired guns working for Flynn, a mobster insisted that the owner let them run a gambling joint out of his night club. During the ensuing struggle, both Jerry and the night club owner were killed. Jerry, with his dying breath, urged Mallory to use his vocal talents to bring down the criminals. Going home, he wore a red half mask and took down the gang using his vocal skills imitating a police siren, a telephone ringing and a shrill whistle that caused men to panic.
Mallory’s editor at first refused to believe in “The Whistler”, as Mallory called himself when fighting crime, but soon made it his job to expose The Whistler.
The Whistler appeared only briefly and no mention of him appears after mid 1946.
Powers and Weapons
The Whistler was a master of vocal mimicry, able to imitate others voices, and mechanical devices such as sirens, telephones and alarms. He could also issue a shrill whistle that caused people to panic in fear.
He was a fair hand-to-hand fighter and a good detective.
