  During World War II, Ivan Illyich Gort was transformed by the Russian government into a superhuman being, intending him to be a symbol of Russia's resistance of Nazi Germany. Afterthe war, he became a fanatical follower of Stalin, participating in purging the Ukraine of any opposition to his leader. When Stalin fell from power, he was exiled to Siberia, returning recently when the Russian government grew concerned about Firestorm and sent him to America to oppose him. Here he killed Richard Dare, who had been the wartime hero Captain X, and has since clashed with a number of super-humans, both alone and during his short tenure on the Suicide Squad.
