  When Vril Dox's deranged son Lyrl Dox took control over the interplanetary police force known as L.E.G.I.O.N., Vril Dox and those among his crew that were loyal to him, broke free and formed 'the Revolutionary Elite Brigade to Eradicate L.E.G.I.O.N. Supremacy'. For several months, the R.E.B.E.L.S. opposed the L.E.G.I.O.N., until Lyrl Dox's evil leadership could be overhtrown. The core members of R.E.B.E.L.S. then became L.E.G.I.O.N. once again.
