QUEEN ANTIOPE |

History
Along with the other Amazons, Antiope was forged by the goddesses of Olympus from the soul of a woman who died an untimely death at the hands of man. Along with her sister Hippolyta she was made queen of the Amazons, but she disagreed with Hippolyta on one key point - she thought that their mission to reform man's world was best served by seclusion, and it seems she was vindicated when, falling in love with Theseus, she and her fellow Amazons were betrayed, imprisoned and raped. When they finally escaped, Antiope wanted to pursue revenge; Hippolyta disagreed and two factions of Amazons parted ways. She led a campaign against Athens, and was about to kill Theseus when he declared his love for her. The two married and Antiope was happy until her death at the hands of Ariadne, one of Theseus' many former loves. Her daughter Phthia succeeded her as leader.
