  Many times, the Spirit of America merged with humans to create national heroes - among them Uncle Sam (I-III), Billy Yank and Johnny Reb. In modern times a rogue group called the National Interest attempted to gain control over the confused Spirit. At the end, an Interest member named Sorcerer atoned for his sins by providing a vessel for a brand-new hero, comprised of the souls of all past incarnations of the Spirit, as well as of several living people representing the various races, ages, sexes and aspects of America. As "the Patriot" this new being defeated the National Interest and the American Scream with the help of the Spectre. Later, the Patriot joined the JSA Reserves, fighting Imperiex probes during the "Our Worlds At War" event. Recently, however, hard times made the need for a strong and recognizable U.S. symbol more apparent, and the Patriot reverted to Uncle Sam (IV) once again.
