  In 1940, Tom Corbett, a member of the French Foreign Legion, was the only survivor of a cruel attack on the savage Mbangi tribe in the middle of the desert. When he had almost died from the heat and thirst, Corbett found a strange pool from which glowing vapors ensued. Drinking from the pool, Corbett immediately gained "neonic" super-powers, including the ability to fly, glow and shoot powerful bolts of energy from his hands. As "Neon the Unknown", Corbett successfully fought crime and Nazis for a year or two. On December 7, 1941, he and other heroes joined forces with Uncle Sam and his early version of the "Freedom Fighters" to stop the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Neon was seemingly killed in the battle.
