  Mace Gardner was born to a family of Irish immigrants. His father, although proud of him, was drunk and abusive to his mother and his younger brother, Guy. After breaking several high school football records, Mace became a cop. When Guy began getting in trouble with law, Mace pummelled him and told him to go straight. Guy took his advice and turned toward the right side of the law, eventually becoming a Green Lantern. When taking down a drug dealer, Mace was shot and crippled from the waist down. Unable to deal with this, he attempted suicide by drowning, but survived and was recruited by the sinister Quorum. With added cybernetic body parts, Mace became Militia, a mercenary and sometimes vigilante, who worked on both sides of the law, often opposing his brother Guy. He was eventually killed by Major Force.
