  The last detective selected for the Gotham City Police Department's Major Crimes Unit by police commissioner James Gordon prior to his retirement, Driver is a clean, by the book cop who resents the way in which the department must rely on Batman. His first partner in the MCU was Charlie Fields, who was killed in front of his eyes by Mister Freeze. Driver wanted to solve this case himself, but Batman had to be called in, much to his chagrin. He and Detective Chandler then worked together to solve a kidnapping, incidentally assisting in capturing the new Firebug at the same time. He took Detective Fields' death hard, but it has only spurred him on to work harder and to ensure that the police can get things done without Batman's help.
