  In 1942, the mystery man Midnight was killed in action and went to Heaven, where he got so bored that he arranged to be transferred to Hell where there were criminals to battle. This aspect of Hell was run by a Devil that was not so bad. The Devil's wife, on the other hand, was evil and dominating and the one truly in charge. Later, it was discovered that there had been a clerical error. Midnight had gone to the afterlife before his time, and could therefore be returned to the land of the living. His death was conveniently erased from history.
