  Presumably somewhat deranged, August Davezak formed a group of animal rights activists who invaded a viral research facility on the outskirts of St. Roch. Despite the fact that the facility had never used animal testing, August was determined to blow it up. Despite the intervention of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, he succeeded in this, also killing one of the scientists, but found himself caught in the blast. Staggering out into the swampland, he took on a monstrous appearance and returned to St. Roch a month later, believing himself to be the reincarnation of the city's patron saint. He tracked down those suffering from various viruses and 'cured' them by killing them and dumping their bodies, giving them wings made of various substances. He was eventually apprehended by the Hawks, but not before killing a string of people including Hawkman's new love, Domina Paris.
