History

  Appa Ali Apsa, a.k.a. the Old-Timer, was one of the immortal Guardians of the Universe, creators of the lawkeeping Green Lantern Corps. After Green Arrow (I) had pointed out to the Guardians that they were too distanced from the mortals they had sworn to protect, the Guardians chose Appa Ali Apsa as their representative to experience life on Earth. Travelling across the USA with Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Green Arrow, Appa experienced many adventures and learned some valuable lessons about life. He later renounced his Guardian title and chose to travel the universe. Shortly after the Crisis, the Guardians withdrew from this universe to mate with the Zamarons, but Appa Ali Apsa chose to remain alone on the planet Oa. However, the isolation made him slowly lose his mind. The former Green Lantern called Priest decided to help the Guardian, but was ultimately killed by the Old-Timer after refusing to give up his own mind to merge with Appa's. Now completely insane, Appa Ali Apsa ended his solitude by transporting multiple cities from multiple planets to Oa, as his playthings and company. All these were cities that Appa had visited during his many travels and included several ones from the USA. Earth's Green Lanterns Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner intervened and opposed the mad Guardian. Finally, his brethren Guardians returned from oblivion and defeated him. Appa Ali Apsa died in the battle.
