History

The Animal Masters are beings who are powered by the Red – the Morphogenetic Field that binds together all animal life. In the beginning, the Animal Masters were awarded the power and freedom to create animals. The original Masters created all the original animals on Earth. Later, small groups of humans became their successors. For the last centuries, the Animal Masters of Earth were the three Native Americans known as Arum, Krate, and Stone. Recently, the three sacrificed themselves in battle with the evil Antagon, all in favour of their own successors – Animal Man, Vixen, Tristess, and Maxine 'Little Wing' Baker, who are now Earth's current Animal Masters. B'wana Beast was also an Animal Master but was corrupted and killed by the Antagon. The four remaining Masters defeated the Antagon by creating an entire universe and trapping the evil inside it. They have not worked together since.

Later, Animal Man encountered an old breed of 'Silent Walkers' – strange, Bigfoot-like beings, who saw Animal Man as their successor and may or may not have been a group of earlier Animal Masters.
