Overview

The son of Hector and Lyta Hall, Daniel was born in the Dreaming, becoming master of the realm on the death of Morpheus.

History

During Morpheus' imprisonment by Roderic Burgess the creatures known as Brute and Glob escaped from the Dreaming and created a dream state for themselves in the mind of a young boy named Jeb Walker. The two schemers then managed to draw Dr. Garrett Sandford, head of a sleep research project at UCLA, into the dream state where he would soon come to call himself the Sandman. As part of their scheme Brute and Glob had covertly given Sandford superhuman powers within the dream state and made him believe he was their master. However when Sandford eventually found out he cracked up and killed himself, and Brute and Glob needed to create another Sandman. This time they used the spirit of Hector Hall, the deceased Infinity, Inc. member formerly known as Silver Scarab. They convinced him that he was the new Sandman and made him bring his pregnant wife Lyta with him to the Dream Dome their headquarters in the dream state. [Sandman Vol. 2 #12]

When Morpheus eventually broke free from captivity and returned to the Dreaming he learned of Brute and Glob's disappearance. He then sat out to find them and located the dream state. Morpheus recaptured Brute and Glob and sentenced them to one thousand years of punishment. He then sent Hector to the realm of the dead and returned Lyta to the world of the living. Before leaving her he informed her that he would one day come to claim her unborn son, who had already spend two years in the dream state, and advised her to take good care of him till then. [Sandman Vol. 2 #12]

Shortly after Lyta's son was born, Morpheus went to see the young boy in the waking world. Here he once again confronted Lyta and told her that her son's name was Daniel. Then he left. [Sandman Vol. 2 #22]

About a year later, Daniel made his first real contact with the denizens of the Dreaming as he visited the House of Secrets in his dreams and met Cain, Abel, Matthew, Eve, Gregory, and Goldie. [Sandman Vol. 2 #40]

When Loki and Puck some time later kidnapped Daniel, they set in motion events that would have far-reaching consequences for the Lord of Dreams. The night after Lyta had found her son missing she encountered the Furies in a dream. Before Lyta woke up, the Furies told her some details of Daniel's disappearance and that they would meet again. In the following days Lyta slowly began to crack up and before long she began walking the streets in a feverish haze. Suddenly remembered what Morpheus had told her and she came to the conclusion that Morpheus had taken her son. Still feverish Lyta began a journey into the realm of the Dreaming where she encountered the Furies again. She then asked them to destroy the dreamlord for killing her son. The Furies then told her that they could only avenge blooddebts and that they couldn't help. They then informed her that had he killed his own son it would be a different matter. Disappointed Lyta left the Furies house, but before she got to far the Furies told her that he did kill his own son. Lyta then made a deal to kill Morpheus for the murder of his own son and was possessed by the power of the Kindly Ones. Using these powers Lyta (now herself an aspect of the Kindly Ones) went on a rampage through the Dreaming leaving nothing intact in her wake.

Meanwhile Morpheus knowing the consequences of Daniel's appearance, sent out Matthew and the newly re-created Corinthian to located the boy. After they found Daniel they brought him back to Morpheus' castle. Soon afterwards Lyta showed up intent on killing Morpheus. But when she found Daniel still alive she had second thoughts and went back to the Furies to call the deal off. The Furies then made it perfectly clear that once they had been asked to revenge a blooddebt there was no turning back. Back at Morpheus' castle the Dream King had a talk with the young Daniel before he went to confront the Kindly Ones, well knowing that it would result in his own death. Shortly after Morpheus' death his essence was drawn to Daniel who was then transformed into the new Lord of Dreams.

Although Daniel was now Dream and aware of all of his predecessors doings as they were now his own, he was at the same time a different entity than Morpheus, a name that the new Lord of Dreams do not accept as his own. Certain aspects of Daniels personality had been made part of this new incarnation and whereas Morpheus had hair and had always been seen wearing dark clothing, the new Dream had white hair and was cloaked in white. Though he was now an entity that have lived since the beginning of time, he had yet to meet his new family for the first time and was still learning of his past doings. When everyone else was attending the funeral of his predecessor, Destruction of the Endless visited Dream at his Castle and gave him some advice on his new status. He then confronted his former mother for one last time and gave her his mark that would protect her from harm before sending her back to the waking world. Following the funeral Dream confronted the rest of the Endless.
