They were concerned about Earth's entry into the nuclear age, and believed humans had not yet proven themselves to be responsible with so much power. The Guardians attempted to recruit Donna Parker, a schoolteacher from Nebraska.    A mother of three, Donna Parker had lost her husband in the Korean War. She was approached by a Guardian offering the responsibilities of a Green Lantern. Parker turned down the Guardians' offer, believing her children must come first. [Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #4]    It has not been revealed if Abin Sur, the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814 at that time, had known of this, or if the Guardians offered any other humans the power ring before Hal Jordan became a Green Lantern. It is unusual, but not unheard of to have more than one Green Lantern in a Space Sector.    At the time of this story, I assume the Justice Society has disbanded, and the "costumed mystery men" were in retirement. My pet theory is due to the rampant paranoia of the McCarthy era, the Guardians wanted to down play extraterrestrial involvement by having a human operative on Earth. Failing this, they called upon Captain Comet, a mutant who is one hundred thousand years more evolutionarily advanced than other humans.
