In Opal, the Shade stands accused of a series of murders he claims he did not commit. The city's resident heroes, as well as some newcomers (Black Condor, Elongated Man, Phantom Lady, and Adam Strange) attempt to go to the bottom with it. Jayne and Charity invoke the ghost of the Black Pirate, and Bobo falls prey to someone that looks like the Shade.

In space, Jack, Mikaal and the Mother Box arrive at Throneworld and find the energy trace of Will Payton. However, they are shot down by hostile defense ships.
