Synopsis:

John Jones and Diane Meade come to Gotham City to investigate the death of Diane's brother Brian, who was in the city to discover more about the urban myth that is 'the Batman.' They receive some help from Captain James Gordon in the police department, who is able to tell them that the death was almost certainly not the suicide it was recorded as. He also helps put them on the trail of Paul Ross, an undercover policeman and Rupert Maggs, media baron. John decides to pursue the Batman angle, by disguising himself as a creature of the night to attract the attention of the 'legend', while Diane discovers that Brian had come across the perpetrator of a string of arsons before he died, and was killed for it. The arsons may have had a connection to Bruce Wayne, a very wealthy Gothamite.

J'onn makes contact with the Batman and introduces himself as the Bronze Wraith, but Batman is uncooperative, somehow discovering that J'onn is a telepath. Meanwhile, Diane speaks to Mr Beebe at the Wayne Foundation, who is able to persuade her that Wayne has nothing to do with the fires, that Maggs is just trying to stir up trouble. On leaving the building she is captured by Lt Ross, who tries to kill her in his most recent arson attack. However, the Batman comes to her rescue, impervious to Ross' bullets. In a panic, Ross sets off the firebomb, and the Batman converts into a green being who is then rescued by the real Batman. Batman then rescues Diane, while the being, J'onn of course, apprehends Ross. The Batman says that he will respect J'onn's secrets, but that he will not trust him, at least not yet.
