Synopsis:
On their lunat watchtower, the JLA watch as a massive craft skewers the Earth and takes
it away. They race to the teleporters in order to reach the planet before it is out of range;
once there they attempt to the quell the panic experiences by the Earth's populace. Batman,
investigating a burnt-out body, is called away to co-ordinate peace-keeping efforts while the
rest of the League make their way to the vessel, which has captured numerous other planets
along with the Earth. They discover that the worlds have been taken by an ancient race, the
Quantum Mechanics, which has suddenly been confronted with the realisation of its mortality
- they have planted 'sleepers' on each world to learn of its concept of the afterlife and
have brought them together in order to build a heaven. However, some of their own, zealots,
oppose this idea and attempt to kill each sleeper. The JLA intervenes to bring each one,
embodying a race's concept of the afterlife, safely together. At the last moment, Batman
realises that Earth's sleeper was actually the dead body he was investigating, killed by a
zealot who took its place, jeopardising everything. The JLA have to demonstrate to the
Mechanics how all life is interconnected and use this unity to overcome the zealot. As the
Mechanics achieve their goal, all the worlds are returned to their rightful place and across
the galaxy sentient beings experience a moment of deep bliss, a parting thank you gift from
the Quantum Mechanics.
